Aegean Miles+Bonus: The Cheapest Route to Star Alliance Gold Ends 4 November 2026
For a DACH-based flyer chasing lounge access, priority boarding and extra baggage across all 26 Star Alliance carriers, Aegean Gold is structurally the cheapest entry point in the alliance — cheaper, in relative terms, than even Miles & More's lowest tier. But Aegean is overhauling the programme on 5 November 2026, and the current, easier thresholds only apply until then.
The deadline that actually matters
Aegean has confirmed a full rules overhaul for Miles+Bonus. Its own FAQ states it plainly: members whose retention period ends on or before 04/11/2026 keep the current rules; anyone upgrading from 05/11/2026 onward must qualify under the new, harder ones. If you start a status run today, you have roughly 3.5 months to finish an upgrade under the easy rules — this is the real reason to act now, not marketing urgency.

Tier miles are earned on Aegean, Olympic Air, and any Star Alliance partner flight credited to your Miles+Bonus account — not only Aegean metal. Path B has no Aegean-specific flight requirement at all, in principle reachable purely via Lufthansa or SWISS long-haul business class. In practice, Path A is usually far cheaper: it needs only four Aegean/Olympic segments, commonly routed through Athens.

The minimum flight count for Gold roughly triples — from 4 to 12 on the mixed path, or up to 32 on a pure-flights path. One travel blog bluntly called Star Alliance Gold via Aegean "basically a thing of the past" for non-Greek residents after the change — a third-party opinion worth noting, not an official statement.
What Star Alliance Gold actually delivers
Aegean Gold and Miles & More Senator both grant the identical Star Alliance Gold benefit set, valid across all 26 member airlines: priority check-in, an extra 20 kg or one extra bag (carrier-dependent), Gold Track fast lane where available, access to over 1,000 lounges worldwide, priority boarding, priority baggage handling, and priority waitlist and stand-by. All of it is explicitly "subject to individual carrier's fare conditions" — a restrictive fare on some partner airlines may not trigger full recognition even with Gold status, so check the operating carrier's rules before you fly.
Gold vs. Miles & More Senator: the honest comparison
Senator requires 1,000 Qualifying Points within a fixed Jan–Dec calendar year — Aegean's rolling personal 12-month window is more forgiving. On Miles & More's own scale, Senator sits at the top; Aegean Gold's 4-flight/24,000-mile bar is structurally closer to Miles & More's lowest tier, Frequent Traveller — yet it unlocks the same Star Alliance Gold benefits as Senator. Neither programme publishes an official euro price for a status run, and real cost depends entirely on your routing and fare class — treat any third-party cost estimate you see elsewhere as a rough, route-specific guess, not a fixed price.
Gotchas to check before you book
- Fare class matters: not every ticket earns the same tier miles. Use Aegean's own Miles Calculator on its site rather than relying on rule-of-thumb percentages.
- The flight-count minimum must be flown on Aegean or Olympic Air metal specifically; only the mileage total can come from any Star Alliance carrier.
- Buying tier miles is capped and mostly a top-up: Silver members can buy at most 2,000 tier miles (€200) per year — nowhere near enough to reach Gold from scratch, and Gold members can only buy miles for retention, not for reaching Gold.
- Aegean's co-branded cards (Alpha Bank, Bank of Cyprus) require a Greek or Cypriot bank relationship — not a realistic earning channel for most DACH residents.
- Tier miles expire after 12 months, so plan the run within that window.
