The honest award check: five numbers before every points transfer
A business-class ticket for 141,000 miles can be excellent or weak. The number alone says nothing. A reliable award check starts with the cash fare you would genuinely pay, subtracts fees, then tests the transfer, flexibility and availability. Five numbers are enough for an honest decision.
1. The real cash alternative
Do not use the highest flexible list fare if you would have chosen another departure, airline or premium economy when paying cash. The fair comparison is a realistic alternative for the same dates, party size and acceptable travel quality. Anything else inflates the cents-per-point result.
2. Every award surcharge
Taxes, carrier surcharges, booking and ticketing fees all belong in the calculation. For two travellers, use the total. A positioning flight required only for the award is a separate decision cost as well.
3. The points actually charged
Use the final checkout price rather than an “from” price in a chart. Hotel free-night benefits need to be deducted correctly; dynamic airline awards require the live price. The core formula is:
Example: (€3,200 − €740) ÷ 141,000 × 100 = 1.74 cents per mile.
4. Transfer ratio and transfer bonus
If five bank points become four airline miles, the airline-mile result is not the value of each bank point. Translate the calculation back to the original currency. A temporary transfer bonus reduces the starting balance required, but it must never justify moving points without confirmed space.
5. Flexibility and the next-best use
Free award cancellation can improve a moderate result; a non-refundable award or heavy change fee can weaken it. Also ask whether you have a realistic, materially better use for the points soon. A theoretical first-class trip years away is not an automatic opportunity cost.
Sequence prevents the biggest mistake
Confirm the seat with the programme, calculate the award, check transfer time and terms, and only then move points.
