Award Trip Guard: five checks before a points trip
The award is found, the points are gone and a confirmation sits in the inbox. Five unresolved details can still break the journey: the ticket has not been issued, a positioning flight is a separate booking, transit rules were missed, the operating carrier is unclear or there is no workable Plan B. 1. Reserved is not always ticketed
Open the trip in the official programme or airline account and confirm that every segment is active and an electronic ticket or receipt has been issued. Check the name, dates and airports against the confirmation. The Guard does not validate a ticket; it prompts the check where the booking is actually controlled.
2. The ticket chain defines positioning exposure
A separately booked positioning flight is not the same as a through connection. The UK CAA explicitly says a self-transfer does not create an automatic right to care, compensation or transport to the final destination after a missed onward flight. That is not a universal legal rule outside the UK, but it is a reliable warning: plan separate tickets as journeys that may have to be rescued independently.
A same-day position into a scarce long-haul award is therefore red in the Guard. An overnight lowers exposure but never removes it. Weather, airport changes, baggage, immigration, industrial action and the last workable alternative still matter. AwardLevel does not publish a universal safe number of hours.
3. Check destination and transit separately
A valid passport alone does not answer every entry question. Nationality, route, transit country, stay length and date may affect passport validity, visa, health or transit requirements. The IATA Travel Centre draws on a database used by airlines; national authorities and embassies remain decisive for an individual trip. The Guard therefore asks only whether an official check was completed — never for nationality, passport number or destination.
4. Marketing carrier may not be operating carrier
In a codeshare, one airline sells a flight operated by another. American Airlines defines the operating carrier as the airline flying the aircraft and directs travellers to check in with the operating carrier of the first flight. Confirm the “operated by” line, terminal, baggage rules and check-in path in the confirmation and with the operator. Partner-programme awards can otherwise begin in the wrong app or at the wrong desk.
5. Plan B belongs in the booking
A Plan B does not mean buying a second ticket in advance. It answers three questions: who issued the ticket, which later flight or alternate airport might be possible, and what cash or points exposure would remain if the critical award fails? “The airline will rebook me” is not a plan across separate tickets, especially when award inventory is scarce.

Bottom line
