How to maximise Marriott Bonvoy — a Lifetime Platinum’s honest playbook
I hold Marriott Lifetime Platinum. That is not a theoretical credit-card status: it requires at least 600 lifetime nights and ten years at Platinum or above. My verdict is therefore deliberately unsentimental. Bonvoy is powerful when its footprint, your stay pattern and a specific redemption line up. Status alone guarantees neither a suite nor identical breakfast at every brand.
The 2026 status ladder
The regular annual thresholds are Silver at 10, Gold at 25, Platinum at 50 and Titanium at 75 Elite Night Credits. Ambassador requires 100 nights plus US$23,000 in qualifying annual spend. The practical jump usually comes at Platinum: a 50% points bonus on eligible spending, potential upgrades including select suites, a brand-dependent welcome gift and lounge or breakfast benefits at participating brands.
What Lifetime Platinum really means
Lifetime Platinum requires 600 qualifying lifetime nights and ten years at Platinum Elite or higher. Once earned, the tier itself no longer needs annual renewal. That does not make annual milestone benefits permanent: Annual Choice Benefits still require 50 or 75 Elite Night Credits in the relevant calendar year. Lifetime status does not replace the yearly qualification for those rewards.
The four Platinum benefits that matter most
- 4 p.m. late checkout: a strong and underrated benefit at Platinum and above. It remains subject to availability at resort and convention hotels, with other brand and property exceptions defined in the terms.
- Arrival upgrade: can include select suites but depends on availability and the hotel’s assessment for the full stay. A better view can satisfy the benefit; a suite is not an entitlement.
- Lounge or breakfast: highly valuable at the right hotel, but not uniform across every brand and region. Check the welcome-gift table and confirm the selection at check-in.
- 50% bonus points: useful on paid qualifying stays. It does not make an overpriced rate good value.
Annual Choice Benefits are choices, not automatic extras
At 50 Elite Night Credits you make one selection, such as five Nightly Upgrade Awards, five Elite Night Credits, a US$1,000 bed discount, a status gift or a charity donation. At 75 nights you receive a second selection; its options can include a Free Night Award worth up to 40,000 points. Marriott says the default for members who miss the selection deadline is Nightly Upgrade Awards.
Nightly Upgrade Awards are requests for premium rooms or select suites, not automatic confirmations, and one is needed per night. Marriott’s current help says a 75-night Free Night Award can be topped up with as many as 25,000 points. Certificate value, expiry and standard-room availability still control; unused certificate value does not come back as points.
Use Stay for 5, Pay for 4 correctly
For five consecutive nights under one Standard Redemption or PointSavers reservation, the lowest points-priced night is removed. Every Bonvoy member qualifies, not only elites. Cash + Points, upgrade awards and many certificate combinations do not qualify. On a ten-night qualifying stay, the two lowest points nights are removed.
The benefit is strongest when all five nights are similarly expensive. If one night is dramatically cheaper, that is the one you get free. Always calculate the whole stay: realistic cash price you would pay, minus remaining cash fees, divided by the points actually charged.
Dynamic pricing needs your own threshold
Bonvoy has no fixed universal cash value. Start with the flexible cash rate you would genuinely book and compare it with the whole points price. Then account for what you give up, any resort fees and the value of flexibility. An aspirational hotel is not automatically a strong redemption if you would never have paid the quoted cash price.

A note for German Amex members
American Express Germany currently lists a 3:2 conversion from Membership Rewards to Bonvoy, a 900-point minimum, increments of three and an estimate of up to one business day. A middling Bonvoy redemption can therefore become a weak Membership Rewards use. Check the hotel first, calculate the exact need and use the transfer risk check; do not park flexible Amex points in Bonvoy speculatively.
My honest Lifetime Platinum verdict
Bonvoy wins through reach and the chance to use one tier across many different trips. It loses on predictability: dynamic award prices, brand-specific breakfast rules and availability-based upgrades require more work than “Platinum is worth it”. The best strategy is not status at any cost. It is a combination of stays you already need, deliberate Choice Benefit selections and redemptions that beat a realistic cash alternative.
