Million Miler in 2026: American, United and Delta do not count the same million
American, United and Delta all call their long-term milestone Million Miler. That does not make them equivalent. Each airline defines which flight miles count, what tier follows and which benefits are lifetime or delivered annually.

American: new tiers make old charts unsafe
American currently lists lifetime Gold at one million, Platinum at two million, Platinum Pro at four million and Executive Platinum at five million. Two million also brings four one-way systemwide upgrades, with four more for each additional million. Its terms say that only defined distance-based flight miles count and that “lifetime” means the lifetime of the relevant programme.
The four- and five-million tiers show why old comparison tables cannot be copied without a current check. An additional million may now lead to a different benefit from the one a traveller remembers.
United: lifetime status and a companion — with a 2027 edge
United currently maps one, two, three and four-plus million lifetime flight miles to Premier Gold, Premier Platinum, Premier 1K and Global Services. Its distinctive layer is the companion benefit. A Million Miler can select an eligible companion or become another Million Miler’s companion.
For 2026, a companion of a one-million miler still shares the sponsor’s highest earned Premier status. Starting in 2027, that companion receives Premier Gold unless they independently earn higher status. Companions of two-million and higher members continue to receive the sponsor’s highest earned status. A plan that merges the 2026 and 2027 rules is wrong.
Delta: flown miles, status delivered annually
Delta currently provides Gold at one million, Platinum at two, Diamond at three and four, and an annual Delta 360° invitation from five million. Award Travel and qualifying partner flights can count; Basic Economy and similar Light fares do not. The official counter appears in the SkyMiles account and Fly Delta app.
The complimentary tier is processed for each Medallion year. Economically, this is not immutable property: benefits and programme rules remain changeable.
Why you should not buy “a million”
The first common error is modelling redeemable miles, card spend or segments when the lifetime counter uses something else. The second is making a large detour for a target normal travel would reach inside the same personal active horizon.
- Read the lifetime counter in the official account.
- Model only activity the current programme says is eligible.
- Separate normal historical pace from the extra chase.
- Calculate time saved and additional benefit years.
- Compare extra cost with conservatively usable benefits.

Bottom line
American, United and Delta reward long loyalty, but not with one currency or one promise. Million Miler is a shared label, not a shared standard. Before taking an extra trip for the milestone, verify the current metric and price the benefit years the trip actually buys.
