80,000 points plus €680: what your award trip really costs
An award can look attractive on the long-haul sector and still cost too much for the complete trip. The relevant comparison covers the money and points needed to get from your real starting point to your destination. This method turns an appealing mileage price into a decision you can check.
Start with the trip you would actually buy
Write down a workable cash alternative: dates, travellers, baggage, cabin, arrival time and cancellation terms. Use the full price you would actually pay. Comparing a business-class award with a business cash fare measures cabin value. If you would otherwise buy economy, also use that economy fare as your actual budget alternative. Part of the difference then pays for more comfort; it is not automatically money saved.
Match the scope: one way against one way, or a complete return journey against another complete return journey. Use one currency and the same number of people throughout.
The cash component extends beyond the airline

These are invented calculation inputs for one consistent trip unit, not a bookable offer. Add hotel and transfer costs only when they are not already included elsewhere. Costs identical under both options can be included on both sides or omitted from both.
Two results answer different questions
Cash budget: this example requires €680 alongside your points. That tells you whether the trip fits your available money.
Economic comparison: if your personal alternative value is 1.0 euro cent per point, you commit another €800 in points. Total comparative cost is €1,480. Against a suitable €1,600 cash itinerary, the advantage is €120. Value the points at 1.3 euro cents instead and the total becomes €1,720; the cash option is now €120 cheaper.
Account separately for confirmed differences in earnings and benefits. If the cash ticket earns more rewards that you will actually use, a conservative value for them reduces the award advantage. Count it once. Avoid double-counting purchased points too: separate the current payment for a necessary top-up from the alternative value of points you already own.
Attractive arithmetic does not protect a separate connection
The UK Civil Aviation Authority explicitly distinguishes connecting journeys from separately booked self-transfers when explaining missed connections. Its statement applies to the legal scope described on that page; it is not a worldwide rule. UK CAA: separate bookings.
For planning, check the ticket chain, baggage collection, repeat security, potential entry requirements and a workable alternative flight. An overnight stop may add separation; it cannot guarantee the connection. Travel time and the consequences of a missed departure remain separate decision factors. An arbitrary cash buffer is not insurance.
Check the price and itinerary together before transferring
- Record both options for identical travellers and journey segments.
- Include every additional cost in the total.
- Calculate at least two personal point valuations.
- Check ticket continuity, cancellation, entry requirements and a realistic fallback.
