Hotel points or cash? Calculate resort fees and the fifth night correctly
A hotel redemption is worth more than a room-rate comparison can tell you. Fees may disappear on an award or remain payable, a multi-night benefit may reduce the points required, and a cash booking may earn additional rewards. A useful calculation therefore starts with the complete stay.
Your comparison unit is the entire reservation
Match nights, guests, room type and meals. Also compare cancellation deadlines, including the local time. A prepaid non-refundable rate is not equivalent to a flexible points reservation. If you still use it as your budget alternative, record that difference clearly.
Collect the final cash price with taxes and mandatory fees. For the award, you need the confirmed total points and all remaining money charges. Do not divide by nights first: that can distort a stay discount or an unusually expensive individual night.
Three programmes require three different checks

Take the final total from the programme’s booking flow. Do not apply a fifth-night reduction a second time to an already discounted points quote. The confirmed quote for your stay is more useful than a generic nightly calculation.
A worked model shows why fees matter
Suppose five suitable nights cost €1,500 in cash, including €150 in mandatory fees. The confirmed award requires 240,000 points after any applicable multi-night benefit. You conservatively value extra earnings available only on the cash booking at €60. These figures are illustrative and do not describe an actual hotel offer.

At a personal valuation of 0.55 euro cents, the 240,000 points represent €1,320. After the €60 of forgone earnings, the first scenario has a €120 advantage. The second has a €30 disadvantage. A small fee line can reverse the decision.
Be realistic about breakfast, status and certificates
Count only the difference in breakfast value between the bookings. If both include the same breakfast, the difference is zero. Do not treat a possible upgrade as guaranteed savings. Expected points earnings require confirmed eligibility for your booking channel; a hoped-for status upgrade is not a cash rebate.
A certificate is also not a freely divisible points balance. Check its expiry, room restrictions and any permitted top-up separately. A certificate close to expiry may justify a modest redemption. It does not make an otherwise unnecessary trip free.
Turn the search into a decision
- Search the entire stay with the real guest count in the hotel programme.
- Match the room, cancellation terms and included benefits against cash.
- Record the final points total and every award fee.
- Subtract only confirmed additional value from the paid booking.
- Compare with your personal point valuation before booking.
